Sand Harbor is on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, right on the northeast shore outside Incline Village. Crystal clear water, massive granite boulders, white sand, and the Sierra Nevada directly behind it. These are the photographs people associate with Lake Tahoe. This is the actual place they come from.
I have photographed here multiple times. The light off the water in the late afternoon is unlike anything else on the lake. The granite boulders give you natural framing and depth that no resort lawn can replicate. It is a small park with real rules around permits and access, but when it works it is one of the most photogenic locations in Tahoe.
If you are getting married at Sand Harbor, knowing the permit process, the timing, and where to be makes a real difference. I know all of it.

ELOPEMENTS
Sand Harbor is one of the best elopement locations in Tahoe. You are not confined to any specific spot. You can get married on the beach, between the granite boulders, on a rocky point with the lake behind you, wherever feels right. Show up, find the spot, say your vows.
You still need the Special Use Permit from Nevada State Parks regardless of where in the park you set up. Applications open October 1 for the upcoming season. If you are planning a spring or early summer elopement, that is when to move on it.
A weekday afternoon in the shoulder season is the ideal setup. Thin crowds, open park, the light doing something real, granite and turquoise water basically to yourselves. That combination is hard to beat anywhere in Tahoe.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S TAKE
The granite boulders are what make Sand Harbor different from every other location on the lake. You get natural composition without having to manufacture it. Depth, framing, texture, all just sitting there. The water in the afternoon turns a color that looks like it was edited and it is exactly what it looks like in person.
You can set up your ceremony anywhere in the park. The beach in front of the Ramada is where most couples go because it is easy and the Ramada gives your group a covered place to gather. But if you want to find a spot between the boulders or further down the beach with nobody around, that is completely doable. Sand Harbor rewards couples who are willing to walk a little.
Summer access is the one thing to plan around. The park can stop letting cars in before 10:30am on busy days. If you are doing a summer ceremony, plan to arrive early or target late afternoon when the park reopens around 5pm. That is also when the light is best so it works out.
If you are getting married at Sand Harbor, hiring a photographer who has been here and knows the permit process makes the day a lot easier.
SAND HARBOR WEDDING FAQ
DO YOU NEED A PERMIT TO GET MARRIED AT SAND HARBOR?
Yes. Nevada State Parks requires a Special Use Permit for all weddings and elopements. Applications open October 1 and close April 15 for the upcoming season. The fee is around $400. You also need to reserve the Ramada separately. Photographers need their own commercial use permit from the park.
HOW MANY GUESTS CAN I HAVE?
Up to 200 is what the permit allows but Sand Harbor works best for elopements and intimate ceremonies under 50. The beach areas are small. If you have a larger guest list a private venue will serve you better.
WHAT STATE IS SAND HARBOR IN?
Nevada. Sand Harbor is part of Nevada’s Lake Tahoe State Park near Incline Village. Because it is in Nevada you need a Nevada marriage license, not California. Nevada requires at least one witness at the ceremony.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR IS BEST?
Spring and fall. Smaller crowds, reliable access, good light. Summer is stunning but the park can stop letting cars in before 10:30am on peak days. If you want a summer date, late afternoon is your best window. The park typically reopens around 5pm and the light is also at its best then.
WHERE EXACTLY IS THE CEREMONY HELD?
Anywhere in the park. The beach in front of the Ramada is the most common spot because it is easy and the Ramada gives your group a covered place to gather. But you can set up between the granite boulders, further down the beach, or anywhere that looks right. You still need the Special Use Permit regardless of where in the park you hold the ceremony.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK A PHOTOGRAPHER?
Summer weekend dates book 12 to 18 months out. Since permit applications open October 1, it makes sense to lock in your photographer at the same time you are applying for the permit.
I have photographed at Sand Harbor and know the permit process, the timing, and where the light lands. Get in touch with your date and I will let you know if I am available.
