I'm a Truckee-based documentary wedding photographer and I've photographed a wedding here. Below is everything I'd want to know before booking, plus where the light lands.

Getting to Elk Cove Inn
The drive is part of it.
Elk sits 25 miles south of the town of Mendocino and about 150 miles north of San Francisco. Figure on 3.5 hours. Most guests come up through Sonoma County, then wind along Route 128 through the Anderson Valley, past the wineries, into a redwood forest that opens to the ocean.
Elk is small. There's a Michelin-starred restaurant, an artist collective gallery, a couple of shops and a museum. Tell guests to arrive the day before and treat the drive like the start of the wedding.
Elk Cove Inn weddings by season
Every season works. Differently.
Spring
Green and soft. Whales are moving along the coast and the garden is waking up. Weather is a bit of a gamble, which is part of the charm.
Summer
Long days, and the fog can roll in. Plan portraits for when it lifts, or lean into it. Foggy cliffs look great.
Fall
My pick. October light was clear and golden when I was there. This is the season I'd book first.
Winter
Storms, big surf and moody skies. Fewer guests, more drama. Pack the rain plan and the boots.

Elk Cove Inn wedding planning tips
Things nobody tells you.
01
Make it a weekend.
The inn has 16 rooms and a micro or small wedding books the whole property. Bring everyone in Friday and let people linger Sunday morning. It's the point of this place.
02
Do a first look.
A first look gets your portraits and family photos done early, while the light is good, so you can enjoy the rest of the evening.
03
Plan the ceremony around the sun.
Check sunset for your date. Set the ceremony so golden hour lands right after it and the portraits get the best light on the bluff.
04
Bring layers.
Cliffside means wind and a cool breeze, even on a warm day. Shawls, jackets and a plan for the hair.
05
Leave the drive buffer.
It's about 3.5 hours from San Francisco on winding roads. Tell guests to arrive the day before, not the morning of.
06
Book early.
The inn says availability is limited and micro and small weddings take the whole property. Book your photographer when you lock the date.

As of November 2026 the inn lists starting prices of $500 for an elopement, $3,000 for a micro wedding and $5,000 for a small wedding. Food and beverage are in-house, lodging is separate and the final number depends on what you build. Ask the inn for a current quote.

What is the food like at Elk Cove Inn?
