Sacramento Foothills Engagement Photographer | Maggie & Kyle at Cronan Ranch
Most engagement shoots happen in places that are easy. A vineyard. A downtown alley with good brick. Somewhere you can park close and wrap up before it gets hot. Maggie and Kyle did not want any of that. They wanted to hike to a ridge above the South Fork American River and catch the sunset. So that is what we did.
Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park sits about twelve miles south of Auburn on Highway 49, outside the small community of Pilot Hill. It is BLM land, rolling oak woodland above the American River canyon, golden hills in every direction. It is the kind of place you drive past on the way to go rafting and think you should stop at some time. We stopped.
The hike up to the ridge is about a mile. We picked up a couple ticks along the way. Worth it.
These Two Are Not Hard to Photograph
Maggie and Kyle have horses. They have chickens. They backpack. They raft. They are the people you want at your campsite. Easy to be around, comfortable outside, not trying to perform anything for the camera. That makes my job straightforward.
When you photograph people who are genuinely at home in the outdoors, you mostly just have to keep up with them. I am hiking behind them, watching the light, waiting for the moments where they forget I am there. That is when the good frames happen.
Why Cronan Ranch Works for an Engagement Shoot
The Sacramento foothills do not get enough credit. Photographers in this region default to Lake Tahoe, Napa, the coast. Cronan Ranch is a forty-five minute drive from Sacramento and it looks like nothing else in the area. Oak woodland, open ridge lines, the river canyon dropping away below you. In spring the grass is green. By late spring it goes golden. Either way it photographs well.
The light on that ridge at sunset is the reason to make the hike. You get above the tree line, the sky opens up, and you have about twenty minutes where everything goes warm and directional. That is the window. We used it.
I am shooting their wedding later this year in Lotus, just down the road from where we did this shoot. That is exactly how it should work. Do the engagement session in a place that means something to the couple, figure out how they move together, then show up to the wedding already knowing what you are working with.

I cover the Sierra Nevada and foothills regularly. Auburn, Placerville, Coloma, Newcastle, El Dorado Hills, the American River corridor. If you are getting married somewhere in this region and want an engagement session that actually fits the landscape you live in, reach out. This is not a part of California that needs a generic shoot to do it justice.
