Jenna and Carlo did their whole engagement session at home, on their farm, Red Dirt Ranch, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Oak grassland, a pine forest, a pond and plenty of room to wander.
The best part? Their three dogs and two cats followed us around the entire time. Every spot we stopped at, they showed up.
Five animals followed us the whole way around.
The oaks · On the farm
Start in their own backyard.
We started in the oak grassland on their property. Dry gold grass, big old oaks and soft light through the branches. When it is your own land, there is nothing to figure out. You just walk.
The pines · Forest trail
Into the pines.
Past the oaks the farm turns into tall pines. The trail got quiet and shady and Carlo picked Jenna up more than once. The dogs ran ahead and waited for us at every turn.
The pond · Red Dirt Ranch
Down to the pond.
There is a pond on the property with pines all the way around it. Still water, dark trees and the two of them right on the edge. The animals were never far behind.
The picnic · Everybody came
Three dogs, two cats.
We finished with a picnic, and of course the animals joined in. Three dogs and two cats followed us around the whole session and wandered into half the frames. Honestly, some of the best ones.

Where did Jenna and Carlo do their engagement photos?

Can we do our engagement session at our own home or farm?
Yes, and it's one of my favorite ways to do it. You already know every corner of the place, you're comfortable and the photos end up meaning more. Jenna and Carlo did theirs on their farm.
Can our pets be in our engagement photos?
Yes. Jenna and Carlo's three dogs and two cats followed us around the whole session. If your animals are part of your life, they should be part of the photos.
How long is an engagement session?
Engagement sessions run 1 to 2 hours. On a big property that's enough time to move through three or four different spots without rushing.
