Olympic Valley, California

Palisades Tahoe is the most dramatic wedding destination in the Sierra Nevada. Two venues, two completely different experiences, and one mountain that knows how to put on a show. Whether you are getting married at High Camp at 8,200 feet above Lake Tahoe or down in the valley at the Olympic Valley Event Center, Palisades Tahoe delivers backdrops that make every other venue look flat.

I have photographed more weddings at Palisades Tahoe than any other location. See Ryan and Chloe’s High Camp summer wedding, Derek and Jack’s gay wedding at High Camp in winter, Delaney and Eric’s fall wedding at the Olympic Valley Event Center, and Molly and Jono’s summer wedding under a full blood moon.

I know exactly where to be and when at both venues. High Camp in summer, High Camp in winter, the valley in fall, the meadow at golden hour in every season. That knowledge makes a real difference on your wedding day.

HIGH CAMP

CAPACITY Up to 175 guests
ACCESS Aerial tram only. One of the most dramatic arrivals of any wedding venue in the world. The tram ride is part of the experience.
CEREMONY Mountaintop deck overlooking Lake Tahoe, Olympic Valley, and the Sierra range at 8,200 feet
RECEPTION Terrace Room with panoramic mountain views
BEST LIGHT Late afternoon through golden hour. Light at elevation is sharper and more dramatic than anywhere below. Clouds move fast. Golden hour hits hard.
BEST SEASONS Summer for wildflowers and long evenings. Winter for snow-covered peaks and a drama that nothing else can match.
FAVORITE SPOT Just outside High Camp on top of the mountain. The views at golden hour from that spot are as good as it gets.

High Camp is one of the most dramatic wedding venues in the Sierra Nevada. Accessed only by aerial tram, the mountaintop ceremony deck overlooks Lake Tahoe and the surrounding peaks at 8,200 feet. I have worked this location in every season and every weather condition. The late afternoon light up here is unlike anything at lower elevation.

The tram ride itself is part of the day. Guests ascend through snowfields or summer wildflowers depending on the season, arriving at the summit already in awe before a single vow has been spoken. It is one of the most cinematic arrivals of any wedding venue in the world.

High Camp rewards photographers who know it. I know where the light lands at every hour, where to position you for portraits, and how to move efficiently through the venue so nothing gets missed. See Ryan and Chloe’s High Camp wedding gallery for an example of what a summer day looks like up here.

At 8,200 feet the light is sharper, warmer, and more dramatic than anything below. Clouds move fast up here and golden hour hits hard and fast. Summer gives you wildflowers and long evenings. Winter gives you snow on every peak and a backdrop so dramatic it is almost unfair.

Whether your High Camp wedding is black tie in the snow or barefoot in summer, I have shot it. I know exactly when and where to be to make the most of the mountain light. That is what makes this one of the most photogenic wedding settings in California.

OLYMPIC VALLEY EVENT CENTER

CAPACITY Up to 225 guests
ACCESS Village level. Easy access, no tram required. Perfect for guests with mobility considerations.
CEREMONY Garden lawn surrounded by aspens and pines in Olympic Valley, with mountain views on all sides
RECEPTION Event Center with floor-to-ceiling windows, decks, and firepits with a view of the Tram Face
BEST LIGHT Golden hour in the big meadow. The valley channels the setting sun directly into the field. Soft and warm all day in the garden.
BEST SEASONS Fall for aspen color and fewer crowds. Summer for lush green and long golden hours. Winter for snow-dusted peaks as a backdrop.
FAVORITE SPOT First look in the meadow. Golden hour in the meadow. Most couples never know it is there.

The Olympic Valley Event Center sits at the base of Palisades Tahoe surrounded by peaks on all sides. It is a completely different experience from High Camp. Down in the valley you get the mountains as a backdrop rather than a perch. The meadow opens up, the sky gets wide, and the whole setting feels like you are inside the mountain rather than on top of it.

The garden lawn ceremony space is stunning in summer. The aspen groves turn in fall. The indoor reception space with floor to ceiling windows handles any weather beautifully. See Delaney and Eric’s fall wedding at the Olympic Valley Event Center and Molly and Jono’s summer wedding under the blood moon for two completely different examples of what this venue can look like.

The Olympic Valley Event Center is one of the most underrated wedding venues in the Tahoe region. It sits in a valley surrounded by peaks, which means you get dramatic mountain views without the elevation challenges of High Camp. The aspen groves change color in fall, the garden lawn is lush in summer, and the indoor reception space handles any weather beautifully.

The big meadow next to the venue is one of the best kept secrets at Palisades Tahoe. Most couples never know it is there. I always take couples out there for their first look and again for golden hour. The light shifts fast in that valley when the sun drops behind the peaks and when it goes off it really goes off.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S TAKE

The tram adds a strong storytelling moment that no other venue can replicate. Light shifts fast at elevation so timing matters. Both venues give you clean backdrops, space to move, and real depth for portraits but they are completely different looks. High Camp is cinematic and wild. OVEC is warm and elegant.

Be ready for changing weather and strong sun at High Camp. I will handle the rest.

Every Season at Palisades Tahoe

Summer

Peak season. Wildflowers on the mountain, green valley below, long golden hours that seem to last forever. If you want the classic Palisades Tahoe wedding experience, summer delivers.

Fall

My personal favorite at OVEC. The aspen groves turn gold and orange, crowds are gone, and you have the whole mountain to yourselves. The meadow in fall at golden hour is something I still think about from weddings years ago.

Winter

A winter wedding at High Camp is in a category of its own. Snow covers every peak, the tram ascends through white alpine terrain, and the ceremony happens at 8,200 feet with the Sierra stretching in every direction. The contrast of formal attire against snow-covered mountains produces some of the most striking wedding photography I have made anywhere.

Spring

Unpredictable and dramatic. Snow may still be on the peaks while wildflowers start in the valley. The light has a clarity that summer loses once the heat builds. For couples who want something different and do not mind working with whatever the mountain gives, spring can deliver extraordinary results.

Palisades Tahoe Wedding FAQ

What is the difference between High Camp and the Olympic Valley Event Center?

High Camp is at 8,200 feet and accessible only by tram, offering a mountaintop ceremony with 360 degree views of Lake Tahoe. The Olympic Valley Event Center is at the base of the mountain with a garden lawn, mountain backdrops on all sides, and an elegant indoor reception space. High Camp is dramatic and remote. OVEC is elegant and accessible. Both are extraordinary.

What time of year is best for a Palisades Tahoe wedding?

Every season has something going for it. Summer gives you wildflowers and long golden hours. Fall gives you aspen color and the whole mountain to yourselves. Winter gives you snow-covered peaks and drama that nothing else can match. The best season is the one that matches your personality as a couple.

How far in advance should I book a photographer for Palisades Tahoe?

Summer dates book out 12 to 18 months in advance. Fall and winter have more flexibility but the best weekends go fast. Book your photographer at the same time as your venue. Do not wait.

Do you offer engagement sessions at Palisades Tahoe?

Yes. The big meadow in Olympic Valley is one of my favorite engagement spots in the region. Getting comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day makes a real difference in how the photos come out. I recommend every couple do an engagement session if they can.

What should I know about the weather at High Camp?

Weather at 8,200 feet changes quickly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Temperatures at the summit run 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the valley. Wind can be strong. Palisades has contingency plans and the venue team is experienced at managing it. Dramatic weather often produces the most memorable images. I have never had a bad weather day at High Camp.

Can we do portraits in the meadow at the Olympic Valley Event Center?

Yes and I strongly recommend it. Most couples never know the meadow is there. I take couples out for their first look and again for golden hour. Open sky, mountain views on all sides, and light that changes dramatically as the sun drops. Build it into your timeline.

Do you photograph LGBTQ+ weddings at Palisades Tahoe?

Absolutely. All couples are welcome and celebrated. Palisades Tahoe is an LGBTQ+ friendly venue and I am an LGBTQ+ friendly photographer. See Derek and Jack’s gay wedding at High Camp for an example of what that can look like.

If you are getting married at High Camp or the Olympic Valley Event Center, hiring an experienced Palisades Tahoe wedding photographer makes a real difference. I know both venues in every season. I know the light, the layout, and how to move through the day so nothing gets missed.
